What are handbuilding pottery classes?

Handbuilding is the art of shaping clay by hand, without a wheel. In our classes you will learn three simple, ancient techniques: pinch, where you press and open a ball of clay into a form; coil, where you build walls by stacking and smoothing rolls of clay; and slab, where you cut and join flat pieces. Between them, these three approaches let you make a wonderful range of things, from cups and bowls to dishes, vases and decorative pieces.

Handbuilding is the gentlest and most welcoming way into clay. There is no wheel to master and no technical skill to fall short of, which means everyone can relax into the making from the very first few minutes.

A class is relaxed and easy, and it runs something like this. We welcome you in and help you settle, then give a short, clear demonstration so you feel confident to begin. From there it is into the making, unhurried and absorbing, with us on hand to help throughout. Most classes run for around ninety minutes to two hours.

Because clay needs to be fired to become durable, you leave your finished piece with us afterwards. We take care of firing and glazing it, and arrange for you to collect it a little later, so the experience carries on past the day itself.
