If you are looking for pottery classes in Fremantle, here is the short version: our beginner friendly handbuilding workshops welcome complete beginners, with no wheel and no experience needed, and you leave with something you made by hand. Whether you are coming along on your own, with a friend, for a celebration or with your team, this guide covers everything you might want to know before you book, including what handbuilding is, who classes suit, what you will make, and what to expect on the day.
What are handbuilding pottery classes?
Handbuilding is the art of shaping clay by hand, without a wheel. In our classes you will learn three simple, ancient techniques: pinch, where you press and open a ball of clay into a form; coil, where you build walls by stacking and smoothing rolls of clay; and slab, where you cut and join flat pieces. Between them, these three approaches let you make a wonderful range of things, from cups and bowls to dishes, vases and decorative pieces.
Handbuilding is the gentlest and most welcoming way into clay. There is no wheel to master and no technical skill to fall short of, which means everyone can relax into the making from the very first few minutes.
Who are pottery classes in Fremantle for?
The short answer is everyone. Our classes are designed to suit a wide range of people and occasions.
Individuals and beginners. Plenty of people come along on their own, simply for a calm, creative couple of hours. It is a friendly, welcoming space, and you will be guided through everything.
Friends and couples. A pottery class is a lovely thing to do together, whether as a catch up with a friend or a relaxed, different kind of date.
Celebrations and hens. Private group sessions make a warm, memorable celebration, and a hens that every guest can enjoy.
Workplaces and teams. Our workshops are a favourite for team building and wellbeing days, either in our studio or brought to your office as a mobile session.
Gifts. If you are buying for someone, a class or a gift voucher is a thoughtful present that is a lovely experience rather than another object.
Do I need any experience?
Not at all, and you do not need to think of yourself as artistic either. Our classes are built for complete beginners and guided from start to finish, and there is genuinely no wrong way to take part.
If you need reassurance, the research is on your side. A study from Drexel University found that a short session of hands-on art making lowered people's stress levels, and the calming effect had no link to how much art experience they had. Being good at art was never the point. Making something with your hands is.
What will you make?
In a typical class, you will make something simple and lovely, like a cup, a small bowl or a dish. Your finished piece will be handmade and a little imperfect, which is exactly the charm of it. It will carry the marks of your hands, and it will be completely yours.
What to expect on the day
A class is relaxed and easy, and it runs something like this. We welcome you in and help you settle, then give a short, clear demonstration so you feel confident to begin. From there it is into the making, unhurried and absorbing, with us on hand to help throughout. Most classes run for around ninety minutes to two hours.
Because clay needs to be fired to become durable, you leave your finished piece with us afterwards. We take care of firing and glazing it, and arrange for you to collect it a little later, so the experience carries on past the day itself.
Why handbuilding rather than the wheel?
We are often asked this, and the answer is simple: we want everyone who walks in to succeed and enjoy themselves, whatever their starting point. The wheel takes real practice before it feels rewarding, and that learning curve can be discouraging in a single class. Handbuilding feels good from the first few minutes, it leaves far more room for personal character and expression, and it is relaxed and social, so there is plenty of space to chat and enjoy the people around you.
Where to find us
You will find us at Happy Hub Collective, Fremantle, a warm, welcoming creative space at 10 Stack Street. Fremantle is a wonderful setting for a creative afternoon, with the markets, the arts and the harbour all close by, so a class slots beautifully into a slow weekend in the port city. You can also find us featured on Visit Fremantle. We hold sessions on weekends as well as other times through the week.
If you would prefer we come to you, our mobile workshops can be set up in your own space, which is especially popular with workplaces and larger private groups.
How much do classes cost, and how do I book?
Pricing depends on the type of class and your group size, and private and corporate sessions are quoted to suit your numbers. The simplest way to find a class and see current pricing and availability is to get in touch, or to browse our upcoming workshops. Whatever you are after, we are happy to help you find the right fit.
The quiet benefits of working with clay
Beyond being enjoyable, working with clay is genuinely good for you. It is calming and grounding, it pulls your attention gently into the present, and it is a lovely antidote to a day spent on screens. Many people describe it as a kind of active meditation, and they leave a class calmer and lighter than they arrived. You do not need to be seeking anything in particular to feel it. You simply need to turn up and make something.
